Amendment to House Highway Reauthorization Legislation Threatens Businesses, Discourages Private Sector Investment in EV Charging

A broad coalition of industry and government organizations today urged Members of Congress to oppose an amendment to the highway reauthorization bill that the House Transportation Committee is considering on June 17. The amendment would allow electric vehicle charging stations at interstate rest areas, undermining the current prohibition on the sale of goods and services to motorists at rest areas and hurting existing businesses and local governments. The best way to increase proliferation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure throughout the United States is through private sector investment by businesses that currently serve the motoring public, a coalition representing cities and communities across America and tens of thousands of off-highway businesses, including truck stops and travel centers, convenience stores, restaurants, hotels and blind entrepreneurs, said today.
