In its upcoming proposal for new legislation, the European Union (EU) plans to propose limiting the use of crop-based biofuels in transportation to 5 percent by 2020 to curb its competition with food and to ensure enough land for food growth. Draft proposals, which are expected to be published in October, will need the approval of EU governments and lawmakers to become law.
The EU's biofuel goal has been to raise the share of renewable fuels in the transport mix to 10 percent by the end of the decade as part of an overall effort to increase the use of renewable sources and limit carbon emissions. Achieving more than 5 percent, however, would require more biofuels produced from non-feed stocks, such as waste or agricultural residues, the EU said.
